33 people have lost their lives so far as fires burn across the Western United States. Entire towns have fallen to flames, millions of acres have burned and 12 people are missing. The images circulating on social media seem otherworldly - orange skies, ash raining from above like the set of a movie set on Mars.
As shocking as these pictures are, our planet has been trending towards this for quite some time.
In fact, the last decade was the hottest on record, which scientists attribute largely to greenhouse gas emissions. America emits more of these gases per capita than any other country in the world, by a fairly wide margin. Although global warming can’t directly start fires, rising temperatures and drought create the perfect environment for fires to flourish.
In the battle against climate change, time is not on our side. Climate models predict an extreme increase in temperatures, unless we take drastic precautions.
