Currently, California is one of only 4 states to restrict access to certified nurse-midwives, a practice that dispropotionately affects black patients.
Support the Justice and Equity in Maternity Care Act in California (SB 1237)
Black Women for Wellness believes in the strength and wisdom of our community and allies. We believe that we have the solutions, resources and responsibility to create the shifts and change needed to impact our health status.
Throughout California black patients are three to four times more likely to die of pregnancy-related causes compared to white patients, an issue that is undoubtedly exacerbated by this pandemic. The COVID-19 pandemic has robbed many patients and families of the nurturing birth experiences they deserve with drastic changes in hospital policies. That’s layered on top of a preexisting care shortage, with nine California counties having no OB-GYN available and many more counties expected to face critical shortages in the next five years.
