The Experience

Thursday, March 22  |  7:30 – 11:30 PM

Get the courage, support, and opportunity to perform stand-up comedy in LA while doing real work to break down gender and racial inequalities in Hollywood!  Through this experience you will conquer your fears of stand-up with a supportive group, learn how to prepare for an comedy routine and DO stand-up at an open mic night in one of LA’s most encouraging comedy clubs. (Of course you don’t HAVE to but, trust us, by the end of the night, you’ll WANT to!)

MEET: A group of 5-10 of us will meet at a restaurant/bar to discuss the day. We’ll talk about our experience with stand-up comedy, our favorites, and what we expect from the experience.

TEACH: go through stand-up basics and how to set up a joke and find personal humor.

BRAINSTORM: get into groups and talk about stories or life experiences we have that might make it into our set (take notes).

WRITE: break off for to gather those ideas and write out a 2-3 minute script.

PRACTICE: run your script/ideas by me (or a small group) and see if it sticks and how to punch it up.

PERFORM: as a group, head to an LA open mic at Flappers and support each other as they go up and do their thing!

Where we will meet

We'll start at Islands Bar & Grill for a fun setting, drinks and food to get our creative vibe flowing. Later we'll walk over to Flappers, one of LA's most lively and accepting clubs for open mic.

What is included

Appetizers and a drink while we create at Island's and a drink at Flappers. Creative development for your hilarious alter ego. Guided work for equality development in Hollywood.

What to bring

Your phone and a notebook/pen (or laptop if you're a typer) . Leave your inhibitions at home!

What We'll Do

While we work together to develop your stand-up routine, we'll do real, data-driven actions to wipe out inequalities on screen for women and people of color. We'll develop funny social media posts, reach out to screenwriters and ask them to expand the roles they write and support grassroots organizations working to diversify the big and little screens.
