SameSide is teaming up with Dawna and Lila from 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu Women's Self Defense to bring you a 90 minute class that will make you more confident and able to defend yourself. These badass ladies have created a self-defense system for women by women. Jiu jitsu is a martial art that emphasizes defending and escaping from larger opponents while implementing techniques from what might be otherwise bad or "worse case scenario" positions, such as being pinned down on your back.
After the class, we will be taking action to end the rape kit backlog in California. There are currently over 13,000 untested rape kits in California, which also means over 13,000 survivors who don't yet have answers and perpetrators who are still walking the streets. Let's use our voices to tell Governor-elect Gavin Newsom that we want something done about this problem!
WHAT TO EXPECT: Our workshops consist of a series of warm-ups and techniques that progress from defense from standing attacks, to being pinned against a wall, to the ground; with partners holding each other down and learning to escape from or control and neutralize an attacker. We break down the theory and movement for each position then practice them in live, controlled drills. We can adapt most moves to any level of fitness, injury or ability. Everyone is welcome in our workshops.
Participants will be in close physical contact grabbing, pushing and moving around a lot. They should expect to use physical exertion and to sweat. Fitted workout clothing is best: we recommend leggings and a long sleeve rash guard or compression shirt but anything not too loose will work. We will be barefoot on mats so please make sure feet are clean and bring flip flops or easy to take off shoes. We also recommend that people bring water and a towel and have their hair pulled back and no jewelry on. Please arrive at least 10 minutes early to fill out our waiver and stretch.
At SameSide, our mission is two-fold. One, we want to inspire people to host experiences that make the world a better place, and help our hosts earn money in the process. And two, we want to inspire people to attend those experiences – to turn off the TV for a night, get out of the house, and go be a part of something amazing. Our goal is to reach the millions of people who want to “get involved” and “do good” but aren’t sure where to begin, or feel like they just don’t have time. At SameSide, we believe that getting involved doesn’t necessarily mean “marching in a protest” or “attending a fundraiser.” There are lots of other ways to make a positive contribution. We want to show people hundreds of options they hadn’t considered before. Our core mission is to inspire people to “get up and do something.” Big, small, close to home, or across the country…just find something that excites you and do it.
Slow and steady wins the race. Snail mail is still relevant when it comes to contacting elected officials. Signing post-cards give you the opportunity to share personal anecdotes about why you care about your cause. Plus, we'll take care of the nitty gritty and mail it on your behalf.
Channel your channels for change instead of avocado toast. Posting on social media gives you the ability to direct messages and photos at specific reps through public and highly trafficked channels. These days, elected officials have staff members specifically designated to monitor incoming inquiries, which means they're always listening- especially if this content comes through en masse. Not only will reps be listening, but your social network will be watching as well.
