The current pay equity bill in Congress is the Paycheck Fairness Act. This is the bill that we have been contacting our Senators and Congressperson about so that they make it a priority. Even if you live in a progressive state where you believe your elected officials will vote yes on the bill, they still have to bring it to the floor to vote. When we send them emails and postcards, they are able to tell their caucus that this is an important issue that needs to be a priority.
So what exactly is the Paycheck Fairness Act? The Paycheck Fairness Act has the ultimate goal of securing equal pay for equal work for all people. The Act would update the Equal Pay act of 1963 to ensure that pay is not discriminatory based on sex. Some of these changes include:
Require employers to demonstrate that wage differentials are based on factors other than sex
Prohibit retaliation against workers who inquire about their employers’ wage practices or disclose their own wages
Strengthen penalties for equal pay violations
Permitting reasonable comparisons between employees within clearly defined geographical areas to determine fair wages
These additions are important for worker protection. Employers used to rely on employees not being able to refuse to state their previous salary and not talking to other employees about their salaries. With the passage of this bill, there will be much more transparency between employer and employee and employee and employee about pay and salary. We must ensure that pay discrimination based on race and gender ends.
