Women at Work – Competing for Status, Salary, and Respect

Equality has been the goal of a democratic society. With women finally achieving many of the same successes and educational goals as men, it is not surprising that equality in the workplace has become an essential concern for women. The door has been opened, yet many women still feel inferior to men because they cannot claim equality in the workplace. This adverse reaction has caused some to want changes in the workplace. Although this has been done, many women still feel unequal and treated differently from men. It could be caused by the differences between men and women or by the differences in how men and women behave in the workplace.

What motivates women?

The leading cause of inequality in the workplace is what women want when they join the workforce. Women often cite a need to work because they want financial security instead of wanting to work for the thrill of accomplishing a goal. They are focused on providing for themselves and their families rather than finding enjoyment from the tasks of their jobs. Women also place great emphasis on having flexible work schedules to spend more time at home with their families.

All of these reasons make it seem as if women are not happy to be in the workforce, whether they have the opportunity to become self-sufficient or enjoy the financial gain. Women’s focus on providing for their families rather than pursuing a career for its own sake has contributed to inequality in the workplace today.

What factors cause women to feel unequal?

Women feel unequal in the workplace because of many reasons.

  • One of these reasons is how men and women communicate with each other when they are at work. For example, men tend to communicate more than women in the workplace. Men also tend to be more direct, whether it is asking for a raise or telling coworkers that he does not care for their methods of doing things. It may seem rude; however, it is not intended to be so. Many women use this behavior as an excuse for how they are treated. Men and women do not communicate in the same way, which can cause inequality in the workplace.
  • Another reason some women feel unequal is that men have more opportunities to get ahead. For example, many men have opportunities to take on more responsibility and essential assignments, while many women are stuck doing the same thing every day. It is not the fault of men, who are trying to advance their careers in the same way that women do. It is simply due to gender differences.
  • Finally, many women quit their jobs when they have children if they feel that they must become mothers. They may feel this way because of how much time and energy it takes to raise a child or want to be with their children as much as possible. It can affect them later in life, even if they get a promotion or a better salary. It is not the case for men, who are more likely to continue working and raising their children independently.

How can companies help to reduce the conflicts between men and women?

  • One way that companies can help is by reducing the amount of competition between men and women. In some ways, this may not be possible. Despite the efforts of some companies to promote equality in the workplace, women may still feel inferior to men due to the different ways in which they communicate with each other or because they are expected to do specific tasks at home. These differences in communication may cause women to feel unequal because they do not understand what their male coworkers are saying.
  • Another way to reduce the inequality between men and women is by promoting equality in the workplace. It is possible to make sure that employees do not feel that they have to be nice to everyone or do specific tasks to have a good reputation with other employees. This way, people will be able to work with people who are alike and others who are different. It can also help reduce the inequality between men and women as it will give women more power in the workplace.
  • Lastly, companies should also encourage cooperation between men and women. By encouraging employees to work together, companies will have a more integrated workforce and less support for gender-based discrimination. It can be done by developing equal policies that allow men and women to take on any responsibilities they want while still not making them feel inferior.

Women fighting for status and respect in a male-dominated society

The fact that women are still fighting for respect and status is a fact that cannot be ignored. Other than the advances of women in educational institutions and politics, the other significant movement has been in the workplace. Women have fought for the right to enter the workforce like men, but they still want to be respected when they get there. The most prominent example of this fight is seen in business, where women are trying to balance work and their families. It isn’t enjoyable because women are still holding down a job, which means they care about their work.

One way that the struggle for equality can be seen is through man against man. There are cases of men fighting to stay in the workforce and keep their positions out of fear that a woman will take their place if they leave. It is not a fight for women; it is more of a fight for men to have control over other men. In this case, women are trying to make it easier for men to leave the workforce to make it easier to come back if they want. It can be seen again with women in business who prefer the traditional ways of doing things and men who prefer newer ways. These people come from two different places but still working together for female equality.

Women also fight for equality with one another, but with a different approach. Women who have already come into the workforce and gained respect do not want to see other women who are not prepared. When new women come into the workforce, they have to learn what it means to be equal to a man. These women look at their past, where they did not have this kind of struggle, and wonder why other women cannot just leave work at work. Women should not have to prove their worth all of the time; they should be able to do what they need to do and then come home and have time for themselves.

Since women were first allowed to get jobs in the workplace, there have been many differences between men and women personally and professionally. The significant struggles currently being seen are communication, cooperation, competition, and respect. Although these struggles may not always be seen as gender-based discrimination, they are still significant issues that need to be addressed to make equal relations between men and women in the workplace.
